So after numerous and successful tests on XLibre on both Debian and Arch, I decided to give the YServer a test. In case you don’t know, YServer is another X11 implementation, just like the XLibre and the Phoenix X11 servers and I am happy to say that Orbitiny Desktop appears to be running beautifully on YServer. It is as if it’s running on XLibre and XOrg. Even keyboard shortcuts work.
The YServer installation did not give me any issues on the latest Sparky Linux (live ISO) once the dependencies were met but I had to do additional post config.
Upon launching it the first time, I got an error message (btw you have to open the log file to see what the error is about) complaining about the logged in user not being part of the input group so I ran sudo usermod -aG input $USER and that did it (after logging out and back in).
I tried launching it a second time and it complained about vulkan not being installed so I installed that also. I tried launching it a third time with starty gedit and it worked straight away without any additional complains so from the terminal window, I was immediately teleported to a fully graphical environment. It reminded me of the startx command back in the late 90s and I even got the same vibe.
I exited the session and then I launched another session: starty xfce4-terminal and it launched fine again. From within the xfce4-terminal, I opened another terminal window and launched xfwm4 and then another one and I CDed to orbitiny-bin-release/orbitiny and ran ./start-orbitiny and a few seconds later, Orbitiny was up on the screen.
I tested a lot of things (but not everything) including Qutiny and everything appears to be fine. I will be switching to XLibre like I said earlier but I will also keep an eye on YServer as well as the Phoenix X11 server.
Next one on my test list is the Frame X11 server but I will test that a little later. Also, if a new version of the Phoenix X11 server comes out, I will be happy to test it again (if the compilation issues I experienced on Sparky Linux get fixed).
