Having Fun with the Phoenix X11 Server (I Got it Running)

OK, so I booted up Endeavour OS which is based on Arch Linux and managed to compile and install the Phoenix X11 display server successfully from within a live session. I pulled the package from the AUR. Of course, I checked the PKGBUILD before I did so and I did not find anything suspicious.

I started testing but then everything went wrong. The first thing I tried to run was the kate editor – see screenshots and the Phoenix X11 display server crashed immediately. Knowing that I couldn’t even run kate, I reluctantly typed start-orbitiny but I already knew the outcome.

To my surprise, I did travel an extra mile or two but it was extremely, extremely slow and nothing looked like it should. The desktop partially showed and was very glitchy. I could not click on anything and it looked like it was restarting. The panel showed up but was unresponsive.

I decided not to post any screenshots (but you can take my word) because search engines may capture the screenshots and mistakenly depict how Orbitiny looks even though it does not.

So, thus far, I can confirm that it works perfectly on XLibre (no surprises there as it is based on Xorg) but not on the Phoenix X11 display server. There is also two other X servers: Frame and YServer and I am yet to have “fun” with those. (UPDATE: It works on YServer).
